Xbox Series S vs Xbox One – Loading Times (FORTNITE + MORE!!)

There is a lot of misinformation online from people who say there is no point in upgrading to the Xbox Series S from the older Xbox One. Well, I can confidently say that these people are wrong. Other than the basic facts that the Series S runs at a higher resolution and can perform at higher frame rates, the significant decrease in time spent on the loading screen is very impressive. And as time is the one thing that we cannot get back, I think it is very important not to waste it.

In this test, we will compare my original Xbox One Day One Edition from 2013 against the new Xbox Series S, comparing the load times on each console and the performance benefits of the new Series S SSD against the old hard drive.

To make this fair and clear, both consoles will be connected to the same monitor, the new Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, and we will be using the picture by picture feature to display both consoles side by side.

Starting both games at the exact same time, the Series S boots up slightly quicker to the splash screen. It also connects to the server a lot sooner. In just under 11 seconds, it is straight into the main menu, and I’m signing into my profile.

I continued to progress through the main menu on Fortnite to see how long it would take to get into a game compared to the old Xbox One. Unfortunately, Fortnite has many adverts in the main menu before you actually get to a lobby, which slowed down this process and had nothing to do with the actual SSD speeds. I will fast forward this section to speed things up.

Approaching over one minute, we’re still not even in the main menu on the old Xbox One, while I’m just about to boot into a lobby on my Series S. After one minute and nine seconds, we’re finally on the start screen on the old Xbox.

The next game I tested was FIFA 21. Just like Fortnite, this game has been optimized for both the Xbox Series S and X. To keep things fair, I decided not to skip any of the cutscenes on the boot-up, such as the ‘EA Sports, it’s in the game,’ to keep things as identical as possible. Now, there is a slight delay to…
