Silica: A Unique Integration of RTS and FPS

Wow is about all I have to say for what I have in store for you today! A game concept that has been explored before, but never truly met this level of integration. This game, which started off as a single developer project with a great concept, has been adopted by Bohemia Interactive’s experimental Development Group known as Bohemia Incubator. The game in question is called Silica an ambitious project combining both RTS and FPS into one insane experience.

Introduction to Silica

Hello there! My name is Dawolf, and today I want to introduce everyone to a game with humble beginnings and a bright future.

When I first saw Silica, I was a bit skeptical of how the game would integrate the first-person mechanic with the RTS experience. There have been several games throughout history that have brushed upon this concept but ultimately fell short in the ability to combine the two genres. Then comes Silica, and might I say, this game absolutely nails the concept.

RTS and FPS Elements in Silica

Although Silica is fresh into Early Access, I am utterly impressed with the progress made in the development. The RTS aspect of this game resembles that of Command and Conquer between building units, research, and overall commander functions, there is plenty to do when leading large groups into battle.

RTS Aspect FPS Aspect
Building units and structures First-person player action
Research and upgrades AI controls base building and unit production
Commander functions and strategy Diverse unit classes and weapons

As the research progresses, players will be able to upgrade their arsenal, choosing between different unit classes such as rifleman, heavy weapons unit, or a highly skilled sniper. The game offers a variety of vehicles and aliens, providing a dynamic experience on the battlefield.

Gameplay Experience

The FPS function in Silica gives command to the AI for base building, research, and unit production. However, players can claim a vehicle and call it to them as long as they have line of sight. The weapons in the game feel surprisingly good for units within the bounds of an RTS game, offering a balance of accuracy and strategy.

  • Scout vehicles for reconnaissance
  • Siege units for heavy firepower
  • Upgrade options for different playstyles

One downfall in the FPS aspect is the need for vehicles to reach the front line later in the game, which can disrupt the action when away from the base. Despite this, Silica offers a unique blend of RTS and FPS elements that deliver a compelling gameplay experience.
